About Newton’s Karate

We believe that the traditional karate of Okinawa provides a full, comprehensive, and effective program for all serious practitioners of the martial arts. While teaching life-protection art, we also strive to instill humility, courtesy, respect, patience, and self-confidence in all students. We are a very family-friendly dojo. We also compete with the Amateur Athletic Union and have produced an impressive number of state, regional, and national champions.

Kobudo, which literally translates as "Ancient Martial Ways," is a separate martial art but closely related to karate. Kobudo training is vitally important for many reasons. Not only does Kobudo preserve an ancient Okinawan fighting art from being eroded by time, but it also enhances the practitioner's karate technique. By training in weapons, the individual develops a strong mental attitude, power, speed, and focus and experiences the "realness" of combat through Kobudo Kumite. The weapons currently being taught here are the bo, nunchaku, sai, tonfa, eaku, tekko, nunte bo, and tanbo.

With Sensei McIntosh being unable to teach regularly, Mr. Newton sought out his Sensei’s teacher, Hanshi Doug Perry, in 2006. Mr. Newton was issued his Godan in Karate and Yondan in Kobudo with the Shorin-Ryu Kensankai in June 2021.

In addition to being a dedicated student of Sensei Perry, Mr. Newton had the opportunity to train with Kyoshi Troy Price, director of the Shuri-Te Bujutsu-Kai. After several training sessions with Mr. Price at various seminars, Mr. Newton joined the Shuri-Te Bujutsu-Kai in January 2020 and received his Instructor certificate in June 2022 as well as the title of Renshi in June 2022.

Mr. Newton has competed and excelled on a state, regional, and national level. His dojo has earned 100s of medals, and he has been both a technical coach and official with AAU karate since 2006.
